Overview of our Film Transfer Process for 8mm and Super 8mm

Peterson Design Studio began transferring film in an effort to preserve over 30 of our own family films, some of which were over 50 years old. While researching the process film transfer facilities were using, we began to question whether we could trust our wonderful memories and historic films to just anyone.

During our research we found...

Some facilities simply project the film on a wall and adjust their camera to slower speeds to capture, resulting in “flickering films” and not capturing every frame of the film footage. Others splice all your film footage together onto one large reel to quicken the transfer process, disregarding the original metal film reels which are historic themselves. Most don’t adjust the white balance between scenes, so color shifts are not accounted for and many aren’t using 3-CCD color technology to accurately capture the color definition of the original film.

We figured there had to be a better way, and we found it!

Our process is entirely digital. Every frame of your 8mm or Super 8mm footage is digitally captured directly to a computer hard drive. We offer full frame viewing via an enlarged gate and the ability to shoot right off the emulsion of the film. A low heat light source provides rich, vibrant colors with zero hot spots and no chance of burning or damaging your film. We use 3-CCD technology to maintain the color definition of the original film. This ensures that no color or film detail is lost in the transfer. Frame by frame capturing means our transfers are 100% flicker free, captured optimally from frame edge to frame edge.

What sets us apart?

The biggest factor that sets us apart is we care about preserving your films. We are NOT a high volume transfer factory. We do not run thousands of feet of footage a day. We are painstakingly accurate in correctly capturing and color balancing your film from scene to scene. We understand your fear of handing over your precious films to just anyone. When you choose Peterson Design Studio to do your high quality film transfer, we treat your priceless films like they are our own.
